In Chinese, you cannot say "Two books" or "Three dogs" directly. You must insert a Classifier / Measure Word (Liàngcǐ - 量词) based on the physical shape or nature of the object:
[NUMBER] + [MEASURE WORD] + [NOUN]
Example: Liǎng (Two) + BĚN (volume/binding) + Shū (books).
1. What Are Measure Words? Why English Uses Them Too
English speakers already use measure words with uncountable nouns! You never say "two waters" or "three papers"; you say:
- Two bottles of water
- Three sheets of paper
- A pair of shoes
Chinese simply extends this elegant organizational logic to every single noun in the language!
2. The Universal Safety-Net Classifier: 个 (Gè)
If you are speaking in real time and freeze because you cannot remember the specific classifier for an object, use 个 (gè)! Every native speaker will understand you instantly:
Yī gè rén (One person) • Sān gè píngguǒ (Three apples).
